Her Mission
The benefits of afterschool chess enrichment are well documented, but still less than 20% of active scholastic chess players are girls. The HerMoveNext Foundation, Inc is helping to change chess demographics, by welcoming scholastic K-12 girls, from beginners to advanced players, for a safe opportunity to play, teach, and officiate competitions. Blending chess, community, and competition, HerMoveNext is empowering girls and encouraging tomorrow’s leaders.
The HerMoveNext.com website and outreach programs were inspired by the eponymously named, 2018 award winning Her Move Next short documentary. Approximately 18 minutes in length, this movie ran exclusively, first in film festivals from San Francisco to New York, and then to London, before premiering on HerMoveNext.com. Subsequently the HerMoveNext programs have greatly expanded, now delivering Her News, sharing girls' chess news, columns, and fictional stories, and offering Her Coaches, free weekly online classes with experienced student chess players.
In 2021, HerMoveNext debuted Her League, all-girls online chess, combining quad tournaments and team chess with grand-prix inspired scoring. Finally having a league of their own, HerMoveNext offers a rare opportunity for free, fun, peer driven online chess uniquely to the chessgirl community. By launching Her League online, the Her Move Next community and competitions are now accessible nationally and internationally in 24 states and 6 countries and growing. Events are run entirely by the Her Move Next community too, which not only includes playing and coaching, but also emceeing and tournament directing monthly matches. And all events are preceded by HerMoveNext’s exclusive opening ceremony, Her Talks, conversations with featured mentors, professional, successful women, offering wisdom and motivation to member participants.
We encourage parents, coaches, clubs, afterschool programs, and chess teams to share their events, photos, videos, stories and smiles by posting to #HerMoveNext and @HerMoveNext social media.
