HMN SEASONS 1-2 | Coach Sophie, is a current senior at John Jay High School and she has been playing chess for five years. She started playing chess in middle school after her friends and younger brother, Alan, took up chess, and she is now a USCF National Master and Woman FIDE Master after taking third place in the 2019 North American U20 Girls Championship.
Before moving to the Westchester area, she was also a player for the Stuyvesant High School chess team during her freshman and sophomore years. Notably, she led the Stuyvesant High School chess team to a first place win at the 2016 K-12 Grade Championships and 2017 All-Girls Nationals (where Sophie also tied for first individually), as well as a fourth place win at the 2017 SuperNationals VI.
Outside of chess, Sophie is also interested in music. She has been involved in music programs throughout high school: she has participated in choir for all four years, and she is a member of her school’s Vocal Jazz group, which took first place at the 2019 Berklee High School Jazz Festival. Sophie plans to continue pursuing her interest in music in college and beyond.
