HMN SEASONS 1-2 | TD Sarina, an eleventh-grader at the Spence School, an all-girls private school, has been playing chess for over 10 years between Singapore and the United States. She was the first chess team captain at Avenues and lead the team to many successes. When Sarina transferred to Spence, she began teaching the after-school chess program there. Sarina has also been selected to teach at the Collegiate Chess Camp for the past three summers. In addition, she has her own chess business where she privately teaches girls and boys ages four to eleven. Chess is an important part of her life and she has volunteered at Rosalyn Yalow’s Chess program for the past four years in the summers and on Saturdays. Sarina also coaches a student privately from Rosalyn Yalow Charter School. Her student won fourth place at All-Girl’s Nationals. Sarina has written articles for Chess Life Online (CLO) about her student’s experience as well as HerMoveNext Tournaments. Summer 2019 Sarina worked at GM Irina Krush’s chess camp.
In addition to chess, she is a strong math student and is currently a math fellow at Spence. Sarina has had internships with a naturopath as well as at Pratham, an NGO in India. In India, she has taught women the importance of technology as they start their careers. She has also worked with children in the slums of India teaching them English and math. Sarina also works with a different NGO in India helping them to improve their social media presence. She was selected for the Writopia essay writing competition and has spoken on many panels regarding her anaphylactic allergies. Sarina is fluent in Mandarin, taught herself to read and write Hindi and can understand Sindhi.
